Ta Ann Plant at Smithton Under Construction

Construction of the Ta Ann rotary peeled veneer mill at Smithton is well under way. The Smithton mill is the second to be built by Ta Ann as part of the Malaysian company’s $60 million investment in Tasmania.

This is an important development for our state. In addition to the approximately 120 construction jobs related to this mill, the facility will employ 50 people in rural Tasmania for years to come. Read more


FT Welcomes Minister Llewellyn

Forestry Tasmania recently welcomed the Honourable David Llewellyn, Minister for Primary Industries, Water and Energy, and the new Minister for Resources with morning tea on May 13.

This is Minister Llewelyn’s third time as Minister with responsibility for forests. From 1989 to 1992 he served as Minister for Forests, and was Minister for Primary Industries, Water and Environment from 1998 to 2002. We are delighted to have someone with his experience, in-depth knowledge and interest in the forest sector. Read more



Forestry Tasmania Scientists Visit Taiwan Forest Research Sites

Conservation Biologist Dr Simon Grove and I recently visited Taiwan on a tour funded and hosted by the Taiwan Forest Research Institute (TFRI).

We were representing both the Warra Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site and the Australian LTER network. The purpose of the tour was to build research collaborations between Taiwan’s and Tasmanian LTER sites, following the visit of TFRI researchers to Tasmania in 2007. Read more

The report is designed to highlight those areas in which Forestry Tasmania has been successful in improving forest management performance, while acknowledging those areas where more focus and improvement is required. Read more




Australia’s 2008 State of the Forests Report Released

Australia's State of the Forests Report 2008 was launched by the Hon Tony Burke MP, and Commonwealth Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in Bairnsdale, Victoria on Wednesday 21 May 2008.

The Report draws upon a wide range of data from the public and private sectors, to provide the most comprehensive review yet of the state of our forests. The report uses the criteria and indicator framework of sustainable forest management developed for this purpose by the Montreal Process Implementation Group for Australia (MIG). Read more



Mr. Australia lifts 12 tonnes to raise money for Cancer PLUS

Current Mr Australia and Forestry Tasmania ambassador Darren Smith recently organised and competed in the Tasmanian Strength and Fitness Challenge to raise money for Cancer PLUS.

Competitors in the Strength and Fitness Challenge performed as many repetitions as possible in squat, bench and dead-lift competitions with the weight bar loaded to their own body weight. Competitors sought sponsorship for each successful repetition with the money raised going to Cancer PLUS. Read more
