Esther Rubenach wins Southern Cross Young Achiever Award
24 year old Esther Rubenach, of Gray was presented with Forestry Tasmania’s Regional Initiative Award last Saturday evening (12 April) at the 2008 Southern Cross Young Achiever Awards. Bob Gordon, FT’s Managing Director presented the Award, with more than 400 guests at the Gala event looking on.
Selected from a strong field of nominees, Ms Rubenach is a most worthy recipient, dedicating over 50 hours each week to voluntary service in her community.
Esther is a volunteer ambulance officer and is also trained in road crash rescue in the State Emergency Service. During the devastating bush fires in 2007, Esther was called to an accident where a young fire fighter had been killed. Despite the danger of burning trees falling around her, she volunteered to remain at the scene to lend her support.
She is also a driver for the Community Transport Service, which provides assistance to individuals and organisations in the community to help them meet their transport needs. In addition, Esther is actively involved as a member and past secretary of the Tasmanian Lymphoedema Centre at St Marys. She is enrolled in Nursing in 2008, and travels to Launceston rather than relocating, so that she can continue her community activities.
Along with the other award winners, Esther was presented with a $1,000 prize grant from GM Holden and Motors and a trophy.
Forestry Tasmania sponsors the award as a way of recognising individuals who work hard to make their communities better places to live. The Award is also a way of supporting those who share FT’s values of caring for people, thinking before acting, getting things done, doing what we say we will do, and being proud of who we are and what we do.
