Young achiever recognised

Young apprentice Christopher Cusick has won the Southern Cross Young Achiever Regional Initiative Award sponsored by Forestry Tasmania.

Christopher, 19 of Nugent spends his working days at the Wursthaus in Cambridge where he has just completed his smallgoods apprenticeship and he is just as busy outside working hours in his various roles with community organisations.

The Southern Cross Young Achiever Regional Initiative Award acknowledges the contribution by young people to their local communities through leadership, achievement and sustainability in primary industries, manufacturing, tourism and employment. It recognises those young regional Tasmanians who are actively involved in positive outcomes for the broader community and who are helping to reshape and inspire their region.

Christopher is president of the Nugent Community and Sports Association and until recently was secretary of South East Field and Game.

He helps organise Clean Up Australia Day and as president of Nugent Community Hall Committee is also one of the main organisers of events for the Bream Creek Show.

The events include the Bream Creek/Nugent Football Match, which received a certificate of recognition for Community Event of the Year at the Australia Day awards.

For this year’s show, Chris and the committee also came up with the idea for and organised a ride-on lawn mower race between Nugent and Bream Creek that was the main event of the day and a great success.

Christopher is also on the steering committee for the Bendigo Bank, which aims to open a community branch in Sorell.

Forestry Tasmania Human Resources manager Lily Burgess presented Christopher with his prize of a trophy and a $1000 grant form GM Holden and Motors at the award dinner at Wrest Point.
