by Murray Kirkwood, Derwent Community Liaison Officer
ALL seedlings grown by Forestry Tasmania for this year’s National Tree Day were quickly snapped up in the Derwent and Mersey districts and only limited numbers were still available in Bass and in the Huon the lead up to the event.
Schools and community groups were encouraged to put in their orders in advance for the 10,000 seedlings prepared by Forestry Tasmania’s Nursery and Seed Centre for Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day.
Since FT started participating in National Tree Day activities in 2006 we have grown more than 33,000 seedlings and this year there has been an exceptionally strong demand.
The nursery will begin work in September on preparing seedlings for next year’s donations.

FT community liaison officers will analyse this year’s trends and will contact schools and community groups so we can better tailor production of species to meet their needs.
