Calling all nature enthusiasts!

by Tracey Tomkinson, Adventure Forests Manager

A brand new photographic competition designed to showcase Tasmania’s state forests has been launched by Forestry Tasmania.

The inaugural Moods of the Forest photographic competition, organised by Forestry Tasmania’s Adventure Forests tourism sites, will encourage Tasmanians to experience Tasmania’s vibrant state forests and capture their experiences on film. Adventure Forest manager Tracey Tomkinson said the competition will encourage people of all photographic ability to capture the spirit of Tasmania’s state forests.

“Tasmania’s state forests are managed for multiple uses to provide the community with as many benefits as possible.

“These benefits include a range of employment opportunities, from beekeepers, to forestry contractors, to firewood merchants.

“There is also a variety of recreational opportunities available in state forests such as walking trails, four-wheel driving, shooting, fishing and infrastructure for barbecues and picnics.

“Furthermore state forests also provide for tourism opportunities, with four major tourism developments established around the state including Hollybank Treetops Adventure, Tarkine Forest Adventures, Maydena Adventure Hub and the iconic Tahune AirWalk,” she said.

The competition will encourage Tasmanian’s to engage with nature and capture the spirit of state forests on film by photographing these opportunities and activities.

The competition will be open from 1 July - 1 August 2010 and categories will include;

Mrs Tomkinson said ten finalists from each category will be selected by a judging panel and the final 30 pieces of work will then tour the state as an exhibition of work.

“Members of the public will then have the opportunity to view the exhibition at several of Forestry Tasmania’s Adventure Forest tourism sites.

“The works will travel to Hollybank Treetop Adventures first and then to the Tahune AirWalk where the public will also have the chance to vote for their favourite piece.”

In addition to category winners selected by the judging panel, a People’s Choice award will be awarded to a photograph in each category as voted by the public.

The announcement of the winners in all categories will be made at a special award night at the Forest and Heritage Centre, Geeveston on Friday 3rd September.

Winners will receive cash prizes, vouchers for Midcity Cameraworld and family passes to all Forestry Tasmania’s Adventure Forest tourism sites.

The winner of the Semi Professional category will receive an invaluable addition to their resume by being commissioned as Forestry Tasmania’s ‘official photographer’ for 12 months.

“The winner will be commissioned to create a portfolio of images entitled Moods of the Forest that will be displayed on site at the Tahune AirWalk as an additional attraction for visitors and used for promotional purposes,” Mrs Tomkinson said.

The exhibition will remain on permanent display at the Forest and Heritage Centre from the 1st September 2010.  Further information is available at www.adventureforests.com.au
