WOULD you like to know more about why Forestry Tasmania conducts regeneration burns, how we select the best trees for eucalypt plantations, and how we manage the use of pesticides in plantations?
We have produced a new series of scientific fact sheets on these subjects that will be available over the coming weeks through our Current Topics section on the FT website home page.
Available now is an overview of regeneration burning in Tasmanian forests. We recognise that this is a topical issue, of concern to many people in the community. This fact sheet briefly explains the fire-adapted ecology of our forests, and the way in which regeneration burns seek to mimic the natural cycle of wildfire and regrowth.
Over the next few weeks we will also post fact sheets that provide background on the common plantation trees, Tasmanian blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and shining gum (E. nitens), and the ways in which we ensure chemical use in plantations is as environmentally benign as possible.
