Prestigious Award for FT

I was honoured to accept on behalf of Forestry Tasmania the Commonwealth Forestry Association Regional Award for South East Asia and the Pacific region for our successful regeneration of eucalypts in native forest. The award recognises outstanding work in the forestry sector at a national and international level and FT is the first corporate recipient of this award in the South East Asia and Pacific region. It is particularly satisfying to have our work acknowledged in this the International Year of Forests which aims to affirm sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of the world's forests. <read more>

The Huon Valley Environment Centre and Still Wild Still Threatened have again failed to dent Forestry Tasmania's commitment to the ongoing Forest Industry Strategy negotiations led by Mr Kelty. The campaign by extremists has been annoying but futile. It has also been dangerous to protesters, contractors and FT staff. <read more> Ta Ann in Hobart were also the subject of a protest today <read more>.

Island Specialty Timbers (IST) was established by FT in 1992 to increase the recovery, availability and value of specialty timbers. I was very pleased to officially open our new IST outlet in Smithton on Thursday. The outlet will provide wood workers and processors with a new convenient source of raw materials. Energy & Resources Minister Bryan Green also unveiled a new IST logo at the opening. The logo uses representations of different species of specialty timbers which combine to form the image of a tree. Keep an eye out for our new IST television commercials which will be appearing statewide on the Southern Cross network commencing this week, or visit our website for a 'small screen' preview. <read more>

It was also pleasing to hear the Tahune AirWalk has been voted the most popular attraction by purchasers of the local restaurant and activity guide and discount publication Entertainment Book. People who bought the book were asked to vote on the venues, events and attractions listed. Of all the activities on offer Tahune AirWalk was their favourite, making it the gold winner for the 2010/11. <read more> There was further cause for celebration as the AirWalk Lodge opened on Wednesday and hosted its first guests. <read more>

On a sombre note, a Tasmanian Forest Memorial has been established in the Heritage Park in Geeveston. The memorial provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions of those who have lost their lives while working in the forest industry in Tasmania. Families, industry or businesses who wish to sponsor a plaque for a former employee or family member can contact the Community Development Officer at the Huon Valley Council.<read more>
