Schools Tree Day

  Carlton Cox
Assistant Manager, Forest Nursery and Tasmanian Seed Centre

MORE than 10,000 seedlings are being prepared by Forestry Tasmania’s Nursery and Seed Centre for Schools Tree Day on July 30 and we are encouraging schools and community groups to put in their orders now.

Forestry Tasmania is donating the seedlings, which are available free of charge to schools and community groups through FT community liaison officers.

Being involved in Schools Tree Day can be very worthwhile experience. Schools Tree Day is run by Planet Ark in conjunction with National Tree Day with the aim of planting one million native trees and shrubs throughout Australia. It is an opportunity for children to make a contribution to the natural environment and have fun at the same time.

Winter is the ideal time to plant seedlings as it gives them time to establish before the stresses of summer. Planet Ark has developed a number of resources to support teachers and their environmental programs including a range of activities and lesson plans that help make it a meaningful educational event.

Students will experience the enjoyment of working outdoors with teachers and the wider school community. Caring the seedlings can be an ongoing project that gives the young people a sense of ownership and responsibility for their environment.

For more information or to place an order, phone 6235 8333 to be directed to the nearest district community liaison officer, or email forestry.tasmania@forestrytas.com.au
