Awards recognise Forestry Tasmania initiatives

FORESTRY Tasmania’s innovative contributions to design and tourism projects have been recognised through prestigious state and national award.

At the national Australian Timber Design Awards in Brisbane, the Gumatj bunkhouse project won the Sustainability award, in recognition of the broad social, economic and environmental aspects of the project.

The project also won the southern regional Australian Timber Design Awards for Sustainability and Use of Engineered Wood Products.

The project is developing a sustainable timber industry on Gumatj owned land to supply timber for a range of industries including the development of community houses designed to suit the tropical climate and more traditional lifestyles of the Northern Territory. It provides jobs, training, business opportunities and cheaper building materials for both the Gumatj family and other local businesses.

Hollybank Treetops Adventure took out the Major Tourism Attraction Award at the Tasmanian Tourism Awards last week.

This is great recognition for Hollybank, which – along with Tarkine Forest Adventures, Tahune AirWalk and our newest drawcard, the Maydena Adventure Hub – is part of our Adventure Forests tourism attractions.

At the awards Tourism Industry Council Tasmania Chief Executive Daniel Hanna said the Tasmanian Tourism Awards showcase the very best the industry has to offer, rewards those who have made an outstanding contribution, and encourages operators to strive to provide quality products and services.

He said the awards were not given lightly and that to maintain high standards, the winners have to earn them.

As a category award winner Hollybank will be automatically entered into the Australian Tourism Awards which will be announced in Hobart on February 26.

Also recognised recently is our amazing Community Assist sponsorship recipient, Burnie long distance runner Vlastik Skvaril who was nominated for the prestigious Tasmanian Australian of the Year Award.

Vlastik completed his latest fundraising epic, riding a push scooter 3,200 kilometres from Darwin to Adelaide, in October. The Forestry Tasmania Southern Cross Television Community Assist sponsorship enabled Vlastik to donate all the funds he raised along the way to CanTeen
