Forestry Tasmania is applauding Vos Construction and Joinery’s success in the Tasmanian Master Builders Awards last week, in which they were honoured for their work on our spectacular lookout on Abbotts Peak, the Eagles Eyrie.
Vos was presented with the ‘Excellence in New Construction $1 million - $2 million (Commercial) Award’ at the awards ceremony on 21 August.
The award recognises the quality of workmanship in construction of the Eagles Eyrie building. In its award citation, the Master Builders Association Tasmania notes the challenges associated with the project, including the remote location, extreme weather conditions, and the difficulties that the mountain terrain caused for site access.
In designing the lookout, Hobart firm 1+2 Architects took full advantage of the location, framing sweeping vistas across the Styx and Tyenna Valleys and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area from every vantage point in the building. The clever design also ensures that the lookout sits in the alpine landscape with minimal visual and environmental intrusion.
Project Manager Construction at Vos, Mark Millhouse, says the recognition by the Master Builders Association is a fitting reward for the dedication of the construction team, which contended with ice, snow and winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour in completing the project.
“The weather was certainly one of the most challenging aspects of the project, as we were not able to predict what conditions would be like in Maydena from Hobart.
“The narrow site access was also a challenge. We worked closely with the architects and Forestry Tasmania to ensure most of the building could be constructed by hand work, as machinery and cranes couldn’t access the site.
“However, we don’t get to work on projects like this very often, and we approached it as a challenge. There were problems, but with lots of thought, they were not insurmountable. The guys did a fantastic job, and they are very proud of their work.”
You can experience the award winning Eagles Eyrie for yourself on a Top of the World Tour. While taking in some of Tasmania’s wildest mountain scenery from the fireside comfort of the observation rooms, you will be treated to gourmet cuisine prepared by one of Tasmania’s leading chefs, Waji Spiby.
