Advisory – fires on state forest - 04/02/2010

Forestry Tasmania staff are continuing to work on a number of fires around the state today.

Teams from Forestry Tasmania and Norske Skog are working to control a new fire which started this morning at Breganti Rd in the Florentine Valley.

A helicopter has been used to assist with fire mapping and reconnaissance and a second helicopter is being used for water bombing operations.

The cause of the fire, which started on the roadside and had burnt out several hectares, is under investigation. It is possible it was started by spotting from the Wayatinah fire in the Derwent Valley.

Overnight the Wayatinah fire moved from state forest into the World Heritage Area near Heals Spur, three kilometres south west of Wayatinah township.

At present the fire is threatening a major communications tower on the summit of Heals Spur and (under the direction of the incident management) team FT is using an incendiary machine to back burn around the tower.  The fire has cut all road and foot access to the site.

The fire at Dublin Rd in the north of the state is moving slowly south through state forest along the slopes under Clumner Bluff.  Overcast weather with light drizzle is currently preventing helicopter work.  A team of 20 ground crew is working on getting hose lines around the southern flank of the 130 ha fire.

Overnight drizzle has dampened the fire at Gog Range, Mole Creek and it is expected to remain within containment lines. Staff are patrolling the area and undertaking blacking out operations.

The fire at Liena Rd, Mole Creek has also been contained. Crews will continue to patrol and monitor the area.

Inquiries regarding the Wayatinah fire should be directed to the Tasmania Fire Service.

Inquiries regarding other fires on which FT employees are working should be directed to Meaghan Newson on 6235 8249.
