Fuel reduction burns planned for West Coast today - 5 November 2010

Forestry Tasmania is planning to conduct three strategic fuel reduction burns on the state’s West Coast today.

The fuel reduction burns will be conducted over a total of 300ha and will consist mainly of button grass plains on state forest.

The three burns will be located at Kynance Creek, Fleabite Creek and Badger Creek.

The fuel reduction burns, which will help break up areas of vegetation to prevent the chance of a dangerous wildfire, will be lit using a helicopter around lunchtime and monitored by fire crews throughout the afternoon.

Fuel reduction burns do generate smoke. In this case we do not expect the smoke to affect the Trial Harbour Road or the Henty Main Road. Based on current weather forecasts, it is anticipated the smoke will disperse to the Southwest away from population centres.
