Ride the Wire
DATE 31/01/2008
Hollybank Treetops Adventure has been operating for 3 weeks and the feedback from the public has been totally positive. Australia’s longest continuous cable glide is proving popular to Tasmania’s visitors and locals alike.
Opening in early January, the first few weeks have seen over four hundred people ride the wire through the Hollybank Forest. People have come back singing the praises of the adventure both for the experience on the wire and the camaraderie that develops along the journey.

You are welcomed at the Hollybank arrival centre where you are kitted out with harness and helmet and the safety features of the tour and equipment are explained. Tour guides accompany groups to interpret the surrounding forest and ensure all goes seamlessly.
Once the introduction is completed, the next step is to experience a practise glide on a small cable system at the back of the arrival centre. This provides participants with the skills to launch and land confidently on the tree platforms.

Having passed this assignment, you then move out to the main wire for the ride of a lifetime. After a short walk through the delightful Hollybank Forest reserve, you arrive at the first platform. One by one, each rider clips on the wire and launches across the void to the first cloud station.
Cloud stations are built of steel and fabric and when on the platform you can see through the tough material to the forest floor. It is also the place where all participants meet and exchange their feelings and thoughts about the journey ahead.
The next launch is a short step across to a 50-metre tree and you land about 25 metres above the forest floor. The wind and tree movement provides a surreal feel to the experience.
On to the next tree and so on, each glide offering something different, until arriving at the two last runs, which happen to be the most spectacular. The penultimate run spears across the Pipers River at a height of 50 metres above the water – a truly awesome glide. The final run of 370 metres is the pinnacle of the tour with a long glide down the Pipers River to the last cloud station.

The rush of wind across the face, the hum of the pulleys and the speed of racing down the wire has not been experienced in Tasmania before. As you descend, the arms become rudders keeping you straight as the cloud stations approach. Legs prepare for a landing and helpful hands guide you onto the platform – an amazing adrenalin rush.
At the end of the journey you unhook from the wire and wind your way back to the arrival centre for a relaxing drink and snack. If you do anything in Tasmania this summer, make sure it is a glide with Hollybank Treetops Adventure, a three-hour unforgettable experience.
