Update on fire in north eastern Tasmania
DATE 28/02/2008
Forestry Tasmania (FT) and the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) are working to bring under control a fire at Red Road, near Pipers River in the northeastern part of the state. Strong southerly winds and low humidity are currently hampering efforts to bring the fire under control.
“The fire now covers approximately 225 hectares, the majority of which – 150 hectares – is on State forest. The fire appears to have started in an area where harvesting was in progress and has spread onto adjacent private land,” said Paul Rosevear, FT’s Assistant District Forest Manager for the Bass District.
"An inter-agency Incident Management Team has been formed to manage the fire with resources dedicated to fighting the blaze including 40 firefighters from FT, TFS and Gunns Limited , 7 FT tankers, 4 TFS tankers, 5 bulldozers and 1 helicopter.
“The origins of the fire are being investigated.
