Adventure Forests – the Clifton Horse Riding Club “gets out there” on the Tasmanian Trail.
DATE 07/03/2008
A little rain did not dampen the spirits of members of the Clifton Horse Riding Club when they recently embarked on a journey from Latrobe to Dover along the Tasmanian Trail.
The journey, taking approximately 3 weeks on horseback, allows for several "rest days" along the route and travels though some spectacular forest, farm land, highland plateaus and past the buildings and bridges of some of Tasmania’s oldest towns. This is truly a journey rich in cultural and natural heritage and the perfect adventure for those who don’t mind a few creature comforts.
Group spokeswoman Helen Gay said that the ride was conducted at a leisurely pace to allow riders to appreciate the varied landscapes along the way. Helen mentioned that several of the horses in their late teens were now veterans of the trail having completed various sections during previous visits "up north".
The Tasmanian Trail is fast developing a reputation as an alternative long distance trail, with over 480 kilometres of forestry roads, fire trails and country roads suitable for horse and Mountain Bike riders as well as hardy bushwalkers. Although the recording of visitors on the trail is imperfect there has been a steady increase in usage with many more enquires from interstate.
Forestry Tasmania, who manages much of the trail in the Mersey District in North West Tasmania, has been receiving an influx of enquires from intrastate, interstate and overseas as awareness of this exciting journey grows.
According to Forestry Tasmania's Jane Becker, "The trail links many rural communities along its length and travellers can either camp at a number of designated camp-sites or take advantage of country hospitality including some lovely B&B's along the way".
The Tasmanian Trail is perfect for those who enjoy soft adventure. The trail can be experienced in short stretches or in its entirety.
