Plans moving ahead for Maydena Adventure Hub
DATE 28/03/2008
Forestry Tasmania, along with tourism, government and community representatives met in New Norfolk this week to discuss the development of an Adventure Hub at Maydena.
Work has already begun on building a roof top of Tasmania experience at the top of Abbotts Peak and is in the process of puchasing business premises in the centre of Maydena as the first stage in the development of an Adventure Hub.

FT has started construction of the summit boardwalk, while setting down the foundation for the building will take place in April. We expect to have the summit building built off-site over winter ready for installation and opening in spring/summer of 2008/09.
The building known as the Eagles’ Eyrie and boardwalk will provide fantastic views across the south-west and once completed, will be fitted out with high quality interpretation, which will highlight the forests, local forest history and of course, eagles.
In addition, FT has purchased the Maydena Trading Post and intends to develop this into a ticketing office for trips to the summit as well as activity tours throughout the region. As this progresses, we are looking at other potential recreation options in the area. It is the range of activity opportunities that have drawn this group together.
Opportunities such as fishing, mountain-biking, sightseeing, bushwalking, 4-wheel driving or other forms of transport will be explored. We will also look at options that could be considered in the future such as ziplines and canopy tours.
Our goal is to provide consumers with a variety of activities so that people can go into this area confident there’s a full day of activity for the whole family. Our vision is that Maydena might serve as hub for a diverse set of activities and we are now doing the work that will inform how best to proceed.
While FT will help develop the infrastructure, tourism development at Maydena will be driven by market demand. FT does not propose to manage all aspects of the development and intends to engage in partnerships with the private sector that recognise the endless opportunities in this area.
This is a completely new approach to how we engage in regional tourism development. Through sharing ideas and exploring opportunities with the private sector while the infrastructure is developed we will have both buildings and activities available by the summer of 2008/09. We’re confident it will be a successful formula.
