Judges for Forestry Tasmania’s annual Trainee of the Year award had a difficult task separating contenders, so they took the commonsense approach and declared joint winners.
Third year trainee Mitchell Raspin has been working out of Fingal and is about to move to the Huon district, based in Geeveston, while Brad Williams completed his traineeship last month and was appointed to a forest officers position at Triabunna in the Derwent District.
The awards were presented in conjunction with the Tom Orr Memorial held by Forestry Tasmania in memory of the fire fighter killed during the East Coast fire of 2006-07.
About 100 people attended the memorial at the Lilydale Football Clubrooms, where Tom Orr and his family were active members.
Forestry Tasmania’s managing director, Bob Gordon, said the annual award was an appropriate commemoration of Tom and the judges’ difficult decision-making indicated the keen competition for it.
“Both recipients have shown excellent development through their traineeships, starting as quiet and reserved youths to growing in confidence and accepting responsibilities including as mentors for their younger colleagues,” Mr Gordon said.
The annual award was introduced as an initiative of the Australian Workers’ Union and Forestry Tasmania as an incentive for trainees.
It was also deemed a fitting tribute to Tom Orr, who’s parents Robyn and Stuart took part in the presentation.
