Kilburn to take on statewide league

DATE 26/02/2010

KILBURN Netball Club is anticipating a successful season this year with a major sponsorship deal and representation in the senior division of the statewide netball league for the first time since the mid 1990s.

The club will also field a 19 and under team in the statewide league, about 20 teams in the Aurora League netball roster and will continue its junior development program.

The club is keen for a return to the glory days of the mid 90s when its teams took out several state league premierships and their hopes have been buoyed by sponsorship through the Community Assist Program.

The sponsorship will facilitate ongoing development of players, coaches and umpires and will contribute towards the costs associated with teams participating in the statewide Aurora League.

Kilburn Netball Club was one of 26 organisations and individuals to receive sponsorship through the Community Assist Program this year.

The program assists individuals and organisations that make their communities better places to live and share Forestry Tasmania core values.

Forestry Tasmania Executive General Manager Hans Drielsma said a record 84 applications were received for this year’s sponsorship program.

“Kilburn Netball Club has been a successful applicant each year since the program began,” he said.

“This year is no exception with the club receiving sponsorship in the Pride of Tasmania category which is open to organisations which offer large-scale community benefit through contribution to sport, health and wellbeing, science, arts, environment or business.

“With approximately 20 teams participating in the Aurora League; ongoing player, coach and umpire training; and a thriving junior development program there is no doubt the club will continue to make a positive contribution to sport, health and well being in the state.

“Participation in team sport not only encourages physical activity essential to health and wellbeing. It also helps in goal setting, develops communication and teamwork skills and the ability to value the contributions of others. These attributes not only make for more well rounded individuals but also benefit the community as a whole.

“These are all positives with which Community Assist is pleased to be associated.”

The Aurora League competition begins at the Silverdome near Launceston this weekend (February 27).
