Almost $3000 raised for Leukaemia Foundation

DATE 30/03/2010

FORESTRY Tasmania staff have raised almost $3,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation through a fundraising shave last Friday.

After the shave, `volunteers’ Dr Steve Read and John Hickey looked a little sheepish without their trademark beards, but were still basically recognisable.

However Dr Tim Wardlaw, who agreed to be part of the event providing a minimum of $2,000 was raised, was totally transformed from his former hirsute self and was virtually unrecognisable.

All three participated as a show of support for a colleague who has recently been diagnosed with leukaemia.

Shave coordinator Dr Sandra Roberts said it was a fantastic result.

“Our goal was to raise $2,000 and it’s wonderful we were able to go well past that,” she said.

“Funds raised are used for leukaemia research and to support leukaemia patients and their families.”

All three men have been bearded for decades and Dr Wardlaw had not been clean shaven since the 1970s.

Dr Roberts has been organising the shaves for four years and even volunteered to have her own head shaved for the first event.

“I have a childhood friend who suffered from leukaemia and as a consequence I am well aware of the impact that is has on the individual involved and their family,” she said.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part this year, especially Steve, John and Tim for putting themselves at risk of ridicule, sunburn and winter chills.

“Also to Lachie Clark and Mark Neyland for wielding the clippers and Subway Sorell, Nicole Carpenter and the Social Committee for organising refreshments for the event.”
