THE Forestry Tasmania Mountain Bike Series state championships will be hotly contested at the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park on Saturday and Sunday March 6 and 7.
The state championships are the culmination of five cross country and five downhill events held statewide over the past five months, with high profile riders Ben Mather and Rowena Fry taking the lead in the open men’s and women’s cross country sections.
Hobart rider Kaine Cannan, who is in the middle of a strong national series campaign, is the favourite for the men’s downhill event. Current national series leader Canadian born Leigh Douglas is expected to dominate the female downhill competition.
The state series and championships are run by the Launceston Mountain Bike Club and the Dirt Devils and sponsored by the Community Assist Program.
Launceston Mountain Bike Club president Ian Smith said the series had attracted riders of all ages across 18 categories, ranging from beginners through to national contenders.
“This season has seen some of the nation’s fastest racers compete on some of the toughest mountain bike race courses in the country,” he said.
“The championships will run over two action-packed days with cross country events on Saturday and the downhill events on Sunday.”
Mr Smith said the series had been significantly boosted by sponsorship through the Pride of Tasmania category of the Community Assist Program.
“Mountain biking is a healthy, fun, accessible and sustainable activity that often takes place in forests managed by Forestry Tasmania,” he said.
“This year Forestry Tasmania Mountain Bike Series events were held at Turners Beach, Clarence Mountain Bike Park, Ben Lomond, Hollybank Adventure Forests and Wyena.”
