Warrawee awaits

DATE 04/03/2010

MORE than a quarter of a million people visit state forests each year and with the increasing costs of transport many are opting to visit areas close to home.

In the north west local schools are capitalising on the educational potential of Warrawee Forest Reserve near Latrobe.

The fauna and flora, local history and archaeology make the reserve an ideal destination for school groups from Devonport, Latrobe and surrounding areas.

Devonport High School teacher Daryl Lindsay said teachers were always looking for opportunities to provide classes with outdoor experiences nearby in order to keep transport costs to a minimum.

Warrawee provides the chance to study forest ecology; riparian habitat; and cultural heritage, particularly in relation to the history of shale-mining that began in 1911.

Together with the nearby Axemen's Hall of Fame at Latrobe, which has developed a solid resource base for teachers, the area provides exceptional recreational facilities and educational opportunities with a variety of fun activities that guarantee a good day out.
