Brisbane Timber & Working with Wood Show, Friday 18 - Sunday 20 May - IST will have a good range of kiln dried, dressed and rough sawn Tasmanian specialty timbers for sale at Stand 40 from 10 am - 5 pm on these days.  Tell or bring your friends.   Murray & Leigh look forward to meeting you there!

Tender Open at IST Geeveston - the May tender is open from Monday 7 - Monday 21 May.  Sixteen lots are available - logs of myrtle, figured eucalypt, wattle, black-heart sassafras, blackwood, Huon and celery-top pine logs plus a slabbed black-heart sassafras log, a pack of dry sawn white sassafras timber and short blocks of tiger myrtle recovered from stumps.   Any questions contact istsales@forestrytas.com.au or 03 6295 7161.

Celery-top pine decking timber - IST Geeveston can supply CTP decking as rough sawn - air dried or dressed decking.  A new option is finger-jointed CTP decking which can be supplied in sizes and long lengths to suit you.  This new product is often stronger than single piece decking because weaker sections near knots are removed in the docking process and any remaining weak sections fail in the pressing line, as the joints are made.

Results for April Tender at IST Smithton -  strong prices were received for the better Dorrel (native olive) logs and good prices were offered for the other myrtle, satin wood, Huon pine and paperbark logs.   See 'Tender Prices' for the rounded prices per cubic metre.

New Stock at IST Geeveston - black-heart and spalted sassafras timber - kiln seasoned packs of squares, boards and slabs are being docked ready for sale; kiln seasoned Huon pine timber and natural edge material in a range of sizes is available; tiger myrtle timber in short, narrow boards to suit small products has just been milled for seasoning, orders taken.   Contact Chris Emmett at IST Geeveston tel. 03 6295 7161 or istsales@forestrytas.com.au.

Premium 'Tiger' Myrtle Veneer leaf - IST Smithton has limited stock of tiger myrtle veneer leaf for sale in bundle lots, many in flitch sequence.  The bundles range from short - long and narrow - wide.  Premium bundles are for sale from $50 / m2 and lower quality bundles at $40 / m2.  Images of bundles are available from Stuart Swanson, email stuart.swanson@forestrytas.com.au or tel. 0428 467 408.  See images of 'tiger' myrtle in the New Stock section.

Our ability to conduct tenders of specialty timbers material during 2012 will depend on the availability and quality of raw material from which to select pieces for tender.

If you wish to receive notice of future tenders and newsletters please email a request to  murray.jessup@forestrytas.com.au

Island Specialty Timbers, (IST) an enterprise of Forestry Tasmania was established at Geeveston in 1992 to increase the recovery, availability and value of specialty timbers from harvesting activities in State forests.   Now three operation centres for IST - Geeveston, Strahan and Smithton, receive or select logs, burls and stumps to sell to wood users or sawmills.  IST Geeveston also mill some logs, burls and stumps into slabs or timber  which are sold seasoned or green for furniture or craft designer / makers, builders, wood-turners, boat builders / repairers and luthiers.  IST Strahan salvage and sell Huon pine craft logs, craftwood, limbwood and stumps.  IST Smithton sell a range of raw material: logs, burls, stumps plus Huon pine craft logs, craft pieces and limb wood.       No sawn timber is sold from IST Smithton or IST Strahan, please contact sawmills at Smithton, Camdale, Strahan, or Lynchford (south of Queenstown).

The special timbers processed by IST are harvested from forests whose managment by Forestry Tasmania has been certified under national and international standards, the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) and the International Standards for Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001).

The three IST sites are licensed Chain of Custody members, FTT 08005, to guarantee customers that all their raw material and products are Tasmanian fine timbers sourced from AFS certified forests.  The Chain of Custody system is managed by Fine Timber Tasmania Inc., maintained by a coordinator and is annually assessed by independent auditors.

Huon Pine material is sourced from sites previously harvested for sawlogs, from stockpiles salvaged many years ago, prior to dam construction and from logs recovered after river floods.

Eighty five (85) per cent of all Huon Pine forests are permanently reserved within National Parks & Reserves.
