Island Specialty Timbers receive or select logs, burls and stumps of special timbers from Tasmania's working forests and process these into raw material for furniture or craft designer / makers, woodturners, builders and luthiers. Our range includes veneers, dressed and dry timber, slabs, turning blanks, burls, logs for purchase, building poles, posts for fencing and decking timber. We stock the following special timbers: Blackwood, Celery-top Pine, Myrtle, Sassafras, Leatherwood, Eucalyptus, Huon Pine and occaisionally musk and King William Pine.
Our specialty is to make available highly figured or coloured timber from logs, burls or stumps in natural slabs, squares or boards, often in matched lots. Figure such as fiddle-back, birds-eye, flame and burl feature or the spectacular colours in black-heart sassafras, tiger myrtle or purple-heart leatherwood are all highly prized for furniture, woodcraft or architectural applications.
Tender sales of selected special timbers logs, stumps and craftwood are conducted about six times each year. Images of the material for sale by tender are posted on this website and during the tender period it can be inspected at Island Specialty Timbers, Geeveston, during business hours, Monday to Friday and on Saturday morning. We can mill logs or burls to your requirements into slabs or squared timber at attractive rates.
The special timbers processed by Island Special Timbers are harvested from forests whose managment by Forestry Tasmania has been certified under national and international standards, such as the Australian Forestry Standard and the International Standards for Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) Huon Pine timber is sourced from sites previously harvested for high-grade sawlogs and from stockpiles harvested prior to dam construction, many years ago.
