First weekend a swoosh for Forestry Tasmania Kilburn

Forestry Tasmania Kilburn is the newest netball side in the under 19’s Tasmanian Netball League and they certainly made their presence known in the first gala meet of 2008 for Tassie’s top league.

The Southern Cross Television Community Assist program has sponsored the Kilburn Netball Club for 2008 and we will be following their progress closely for what looks like being one hell of a debut season!

Read on as Forestry Tasmania Kilburn President Melinda Williams reports on the progress of Forestry Tasmania Kilburn through the 2008 season.

Hi Claire,
18/06/2008

Last weekend was our final one in the North.  Launceston has become known as our second home as we have played there so many times this season!  Having lost to both r=teams in previous rounds we were out to make amends.

On Saturday we played the Northern Saints who are based in Launceston and are currently sitting on top of the ladder.  Forestry Tasmania Kilburn faced two immediate and major challenges: the aggravation of a knee injury to dynamic centre court player, Tara Patmore,in warm-up time and an extraordinary number of footwork infringements.  We  still matched the very strong Saints team until 3/4 time, with Jess Mason working tirelesly to limit Saints' quick feeding into the circle.  In the  last quarter, Saints drew away to a convincing win.  Spectacular shooting by as well as superior match fitness proved to be the difference between the two teams as we went down by 13 goals.

On Sunday we were up against the Burnie Tigers.  In response to Narelle Cameron's firm, consistent umpiring, Forestry Tasmania Kilburn was able to execute its game plan based on self-discipline, structured play and persistence. Burnie had, however, built to a 5 goal lead by 3/4 time, capitalising on opportunities in goal and positioning well in defence to pressure Kilburn's passing. The move of Amy Williams to Centre then had an immediate impact, enabling more free-flowing movement in Kilburn's attacking half. A timely interception from WD, Stacey Harris,  cemented our advantage in the last minute of the game.  FTK finished its run of 14 consecutive matches in the north, learning from a few narrow, disappointing losses this season, and coming home with a tenacious, well-deserved win by two goals.

This coming weekend will be our last two matches.  We're currently sitting 6th on the ladder and barring a miracle we won't be making the finals (top 4).  We are playing in Hobart so we are really hoping to get a lot of supporters along to Aurora stadium to make it a big last weekend.  We play at 11am on Saturday against Kingston and 5pm on Sunday against Karana.  Please come and say hi if you are able to come along ... and try and wear some blue!

Thanks for your support, Melinda

Hi Claire,
03/06/2008

It's been a difficult and frustrating weekend for the Forestry Tasmania Kilburn players and supporters. We had two games at the Silverdome and whilst we improved on the margins from previous rounds, we were unable to take either game.

On Saturday we faced ladder leaders the Country Club Cavaliers. Cavaliers made a quick start to the game taking an early lead. Kilburn fought back to be only one goal down at three quarter time. Both teams worked tirelessly. Jacinta Limbrick stepped up from our STNA 19 and Under team to take the court for half a game and fitted in well. In the final quarter mistakes crept in to our side and we were unable to match the strong passing and accurate shooting of the Cavaliers. Cavs ended up taking the game by 8 goals. Last time we met they won by 15 so it was one consolation to have bettered that margin.

On Sunday we met Edgewater Devon in what was expected to be a closely contested match. Last time we played Devon they won by only three goals. Both teams started slowly in this match but Devon were the quicker of the two on the scoreboard in the first quarter. Ashton Whiley from Devon and Stacey Harris from Kilburn proved to be an even, but physical, match up in the centre court position. Both defence ends were tight with Laura Reggett from Kilburn and Kelsey Dell from Devon taking a number of intercepts at their respective ends of the court. Despite Devon edging away in the third quarter, Kilburn made a strong comeback in the final quarter for the scores to be level with only seconds remaining. A heartbreaking turnover at the end saw Devon score a goal in the dying seconds of the match and take the game by only one goal. So near and yet so far! This seems to be the story of our year so far. Of the games we have not won, only one was lost by a margin of greater than 10 goals, most have been lost by less than 5!

Next week is a well earned break for the long weekend, then we have our final double header at the Silverdome before resturning home to play our final matches in Hobart.

Thanks for all of your support,

Melinda

Hi Claire, 26/05/2008

A great weekend for Forestry Tasmania Kilburn! Coach Sally Williams has written the following report from the matches.....

After allowing DJ Palena a quick start on Saturday, FTK gradually asserted its supremacy, with Jessie Mason controlling the tempo in attack. In her first TNL game, Jacinta Limbrick stepped capably into the Wing Defence role and contributed to our characteristically free-flowing set plays out of defence. The shooters used both their height and their understanding of each others' movement to set up close shots and this resulted in an impressive accuracy percentage. Laura Reggett and Julia Kantzos were able to contain the various shooting options that DJ Palena fielded. Julia was Best on Court. Final score – Forestry Tasmania Kilburn 64 – DJ Palena 28

On Sunday against Wrest Point, FTK burst out to a 15 goal lead by quarter time. Adding two more new players to the line up, Louise McNeill and Genevieve Steele to our line-up, FTK took the opportunity to vary the usual positions and rest key players. Laura Reggett, Best on Court, anchored the defence with quick anticipation and timely interceptions. With Kayla Herbert and Alanna Kingston maintaining 80% accuracy in goal shooting, FTK always looked well in control. Final score Forestry Tasmania Kilburn 66 – Wrest Point 39.

Hi Claire, 21/05/08

We’ve had two big weekends in netball. Last weekend we travelled to the North West coast to play Burnie Tigers and Eyelines Devon. Unfortunately Forestry Tasmania Kilburn came away with two losses, both by only 3 goals. Both games were very hard and tightly fought but we just couldn’t get over the line and in front when it counted. Worse still Tara Patmore, our main centre player went down heavily on Sunday and dislocated her knee. Tara’s walking on it now but will be out for a few weeks and the girls will certainly miss her contributions on court.

This weekend we played Betta Milk Arrows and Cripps Waratah at the Silverdome. Arrows were sitting on top of the ladder and in a previous round they beat us by one goal. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn got a really solid start and, despite Arrows playing hard netball and closing the gap, we held on to the lead and built on it to take the game by 8 goals. A fantastic win!!

Sunday saw us at the Silverdome for a 9am game in the chilly morning. We are playing against Cripps who had a bye the day before. The girls tried their hardest but if was too difficult to overcome tiredness from the previous day and blisters and mistakes soon crept in. Disappointingly we lost the game by 4 goals after beating Cripps in a previous round.

We’re on the road again this weekend back to Launceston to meet the teams we played in the very first round, Wrest Point and DJ Palena. The girls are looking to boost their ladder position and spirits by coming back with two wins – I’ll let you know how we get on next week!

Hi Claire, 04/05/2008

Its been a busy couple of weeks since I last emailed you about the progress of the Forestry Tasmania Kilburn 19 and Under Aurora League team. We've since had three games spread over two weekends. On the 26th and 27th we had a double header at the Silverdome in Launceston. Double headers are always a challenge, particularly when it's against two strong teams such as Karana and Kingston.

On Saturday we had an afternoon game against Karana. This was always going to be a bit of a mental game as well as a physical one. The girls started slowly with Karana getting the jump on them in th first quarter. We fought back strongly towards the end of the first quarter to see us down by only 2 at quarter time. Accurate shooting by our goalies, particularly Kayla Herbert, and a reduction in Karana's accuracy saw Forestry Tasmania Kilburn to take the lead in the second quarter. Stacey Harris moved in to GA for us showing her flexibility and quick moves in the circle. A very physical and evenly contested game, we pulled away to lead by 5 in the third quarter and managed to maintain this lead throughout the final quarter to take the game by 4 goals. Player of the match was Forestry Tasmania Kilburn's Tara Patmore who was recognised for her strength, persistence and tenacity in a tough competition.

The next day we had to front up in the morning to play Kingston, who had the benefit of a bye the day before whilst many of our girls were nursing blistered feet from the previous day's action. Both teams moved quickly in the first quarter, although Kingston was converting their moves more effectively in to goals. We played catch up netball for most of the quarter, eventually breaking enough centre passes to take the lead. Quick constructive moves and accurate shooting by Kingston saw them convincingly take the third quarter. The final quarter started much the same but Forestry Tasmania Kilburn stepped up the pressure and forced several turnovers to be only two behind. Our defence was performing well with Jessie Mason and Julia Kantzos rebounding strongly and capitalising on any misses from Kingston. A further turnover saw us one goal down with the centre pass to follow.

Tara Patmore from Kilburn played a pivotal role in the centre as she did in the previous day's game against Karana. Determined play from both sides saw this centre pass turned over but Kingston were unable to score from this and the ball travelled back down to our goal circle. The levelling score was shot in the dying seconds of the match, resulting in a 31 all draw. Player of the match was Kilburn's Laura Reggett for her positive moves and clean defence. All of this happened whilst I was on the official bench scoring and not allowed to cheer or yell out or anything!

This weekend saw another trek to the Silverdome but for one game only late on Saturday afternoon. I wasn't able to go as the team I play with had a game at 2:45 in the afternoon. We played the current top of the ladder team, the Country Club Cavaliers. From what I am told it was an incredibly physical match with our girls giving it absolutely all they had. The defence end stepped up to the challenge and played very tight netball but it wasn't to be our day. We lost to the Cavs by 15 goals. Disappointing, but the girls gave it their best shot and will be out to make amends the next time they meet.

Next weekend we have another double header, but this time on the North West Coast. Saturday afternoon sees us playing the Burnie Tigers at Penguin at 4pm, then on Sunday we are at St Brendan Shaw College against Devon at 10:45. I'll let you all know how it goes next week!

Hi Claire, 13/04/08

What a weekend of netball!! Our Forestry Tasmania 19 and Under team took the court again for games on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Our team was slightly depleted with three players unavailable. Jess Savage is out with injury - unfortunately it looks like she may not be able to take her place in the team at all this year. We wish her well with her recovery and hope she comes back as soon as she is able. Also absent were defender Jessie Mason and Alanah Kingston, who plays at both ends of the court, who are both off in the sunny Cook Islands playing netball in a CANA representative team. To boost the side we have goalie Imogen Garrett who has become part of the regular squad and also Chantelle Robson from our 17 & Under Divsion 1 side who was able to fill in for the weekend.

Saturday saw us front up against Cripps Waratah. After we made a very speedy getaway in the first quarter, Cripps gained back some extra ground in the second. Our girls had to continue to work hard thoughout the remaining two quarters but managed to pull away and take the game by a convincing margin of 20 goals. Player of the match was Imogen Garrett for her quick moves in and around the circle and very accurate shooting.

On Sunday afternoon we played against the Betta Milk Arrows. We expected the Arrows to be our toughest competition yet, particularly with us having come from quite a physical game the day before. The Arrows team contained three girls that played with our Under 17 division 1 team last year so we were very familiar with the skills that these players had. Arrows swooped in the first quarter and got a bit of a jump on us early on. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn consolidated and managed to peg back Arrows' lead to 1 goal at the end of the first quarter. A tough and see-sawing match followed. We were on the edge of our seats for the final quarter as there was never more than three goals in it. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn were two up with about 3 minutes to play. An Arrows centre pass netted them a goal, making the margin one. Unfortunately our centre pass was turned over and Arrows equalled the score. It was an Arrows centre pass that saw them go one up with only seconds to spare. Betta Milk Arrows ended up defeating us by 1 goal. An exciting game to watch we just wish it went in our favour - oh well we'll get them next time!

Next week sees us on the road to Launceston taking on the TCY Northern Saints on Sunday - I'll let you know how we go!

Melinda
Hi Claire, 02/04/08

Well it's been a fairly quiet couple of weeks for the Forestry Tasmania Kilburn TNL team. As there are nationals for the state 17s, 19s and 21s on in Perth at the moment the TNL roster is taking a bit of a break. However, the season kicked off for the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association last weekend. There was a gala opening of the second Aurora Sports Stadium and teams began their winter roster competitions. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn were obviously inspired by the success our TNL team has had to date as many of our teams started the season with a win. Congratulations must go to the following winning Forestry Tasmania Kilburn teams:

11 and Under
13 and Under Division 4
13 and Under Division 3
13 and Under Division 2
13 and Under Division 1
15 and Under Division 3 Blue
15 and Under Division 1
17 and Under Division 3
17 and Under Division 1
19 and Under White
1st Grade

Things are looking good for our club with several teams now sitting on top of the ladder! You can check these out on the STNA web site if you would like to - visit it at http://www.stna.asn.au/ . Let's hope the teams that didn't score a win last week will be able to overcome their opponents in their games this Saturday. We're also hoping the wind is calmer by then otherwise there will be some very low scoring games!

We are all looking forward to coming in to Forestry Tasmania next week for our launch and to meet up with our sponsors.

Thanks for your support,
Melinda

Hi Claire,
13/03/08

It’s been a much quieter week for Forestry Tasmania Kilburn this week as we are in the middle of two of our rostered byes. The girls had an aqua session as a recovery training session coming off their big opening weekend. They all had to wear swim caps which provided quite a deal of amusement. I thought some pics of this would be good to show the diversity of training that they do but there was no way they would let anyone near them with a camera!!

They have also been doing some work on sports nutrition to make sure they are eating appropriately to optimise their performance. Several have found this very interesting and are opting to do some have some more detailed dietary analysis done to see if they are really getting all of the nutrients they need….and not too many of the extras. I made them some muesli bars to show that suitable healthy foods for recovery after a game can taste good too – it seemed to work as there was quite a demand for the recipe afterwards!

Also on the training agenda are some matches against other Forestry Tasmania Kilburn teams to keep their match practice up. They are going to be playing our Bartercard team this Sunday which should prove very stiff competition as they are our top grade players.

That’s about it for now, I’ll send some more pictures soon.

Thanks for the support,
Melinda

Hi Tamika & Claire,

I just thought I'd let you know Forestry Tasmania Kilburn had a wonderful start to the season at our Gala Weekend. We played two games and managed two resounding wins beating DJ Palena by 36 goals and Wrest Point OHA by 49 goals. With such large winning margins we are sure to be top of the 19 and Under ladder when it is published on the Netball Tasmania web site in the next day or so - you might like to take a look at www.tas.netball.asn.au . In the game against DJ Palena our captain, Tara Patmore was named player of the match and in the game against Wrest Point OHA one of our circle defenders, Julia Kantzos was player of the match.

The girls were thrilled with your sponsorship and loved their tops and hats and water bottles. The tops looked great with their uniforms. I will send some photos in with Dean tomorrow morning for you to have a look at. The players and officials have all signed our standard permission form for their images to be used for promotional purposes so if you would like to use or display any of the photos please go ahead. Would it be possible to get a few more water bottles - about 4-6? The team manager and I would both like one and it would be good to have a few spares for any of our 17 and Under girls who fill in for the team in case of injury or absence of one of our regular players.

Thanks for all of your support,

Melinda
