Round 11 – Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs Cripps Waratah & Round 12 - Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs St Lukes’ Karana

Forestry Tasmania Kilburn's netball teams have been battling injury and illness throughout the last two Aurora League rounds with matches against Cripps Waratah and St Lukes’ Karana Flames.

FTK has met all of the teams in the roster now, with Cripps being the last team for us to face up to in round 11. In the opening game we came up against some tough and experienced opposition. Despite trying our best we lost the matchby 40 goals.

In the 19 & Under competition FTK have had a season of mixed performances and were looking to catch Cripps off guard and notch up a win. Cripps started slowly but soon began to capitalise on the errors made by FTK. We made a change at the break bringing on the experienced Tara Patmore. She created drive from the centre court presenting opportunities for their goalies, who found it hard to convert due to some tight Cripps defence. Unfortunately Tara came off with an injury late in the quarter. Kilburn made the third their best quarter on the scoreboard with Jess Boulter shooting some long goals. Unfortunately Jess had been ill during the week and was only able to play one quarter for the game. Cripps eventually ran out winners by 33 goals.

In round 12 Forestry Tasmania Kilburn got to meet St Lukes’ Karana flames for the second time. We were not looking forward to this game, after being decimated in an earlier round by Karana. FTK pulled together and played a better style of netball, however were not able to match up to the polished Karana side. Whilst Karana took the game out by 42, this was a big improvement from our team having been beaten by 61 last time. We aim to improve in all of our second round performances!

The 19 & Under team didn’t fare much better against Karana. They found it very difficult to get into a rhythm and to make the plays work all of the way down the court and lost the match by 41 goals.

The weekend we are on a road trip to the North West coast facing Burnie on Saturday evening in Penguin and Devon on Sunday morning in Devonport. The Burnie match will be difficult and we are aiming to better our first round match against the Tigers. The Devon match will be our best chance of a win this season and we are certainly going to try our best – I hope to have a more positive report next time round!

Round 10 Game 1 – Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs Raine & Horne Arrows Saturday - 1st May

Forestry Tasmania Kilburn 19 and Under started strongly, getting a head start on Raine and Horne Arrows on the scoreboard. Arrows worked hard to peg back FTK’s lead to three goals at quarter time. FTK goalies Jess Boulter and Bianca Hollingsworth combined well in the circle as the teams went goal for goal despite close attention from Arrows’ defenders. By half time Arrows had taken a three goal lead. The third quarter saw changes to the Arrows’ defence end. This very effective move shut down a lot of the movement in the FTK goal circle and saw their scoring rate reduced. Arrows’ scored 13 to FTK’s 10 to further push out their lead. In the final quarter FTK found it difficult to feed the ball down through the centre court to their goal circle. Arrows took out the match by 13 goals.

Forestry Tasmania Kilburn could not match the physical strength, strong purposeful passing and accurate shooting from the Raine and Horne Arrows which was on display. Arrows’ centre court players moved the ball down in a smooth, flowing style of play, which showed their experience as a team. For FTK highlights of the match were Jessie Mason’s controlled defence, Chloe Bennett’s determined work in the centre court and Jess Cornwall’s leading in the goal circle however these were not enough to make a dent in the Arrows’ score. Fresh faces for FTK at halftime were matched with changes by Arrows’ line up and the match continued in much the same as it began – with Arrows dominating. The last quarter was greeted with much excitement from the Arrows bench as the scoreboard went in to three figures – final match score being Raine and Horne Arrows 102 to Forestry Tasmania Kilburn 19. FTK went away feeling very down and disappointed in our performance.

Round 10 Game 2 – Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs TCY Northern Saints Saturday 2nd May

In the 19 and Under game the TCY Northern Saints started the match well with their shooters working smoothly and shooting accurately to work their way to a four goal lead at quarter time. In the second Forestry Tasmania’s Noni Hyland and Shantelle Robson worked hard in defence but could not significantly slow the goals from the Saints who extended their lead to 13 goals at half time. In the third quarter the Saints continued their polished performance to increase their lead to 21 goals. In the final quarter the shooters finished off by scoring 20 goals in the final quarter. TCY Northern Saints took the match out 60 to Forestry Tasmania Kilburn’s 22.

In the Open game TCY Northern Saints started the first quarter with a hard, fast style of play that saw them quickly outscore Forestry Tasmania Kilburn. FTK regrouped and modified their playing style to better protect and maintain possession of the ball and whilst this moved it more slowly forwards, it avoided the long, often inaccurate passes that marred the start of the quarter. FTK’s Chloe Bennett took several intercepts on the wing and made sure she was first to loose balls. At the end of the first quarter FTK had regained some ground however, Saints still maintained control and a lead of 11 goals. FTK started the second quarter in a determined fashion and managed to keep pace with the Saints, both teams scoring eight goals for the quarter. In the third quarter some positional changes for Saints allowed their attack end to flow more smoothly and they moved slightly further ahead to lead by 17 at three quarter time. In the final quarter Kilburn showed both patience and determination to put in one of their best performances, vastly improving on their Round 1 clash with the Saints, however the Saints were still the better team and took out the match 57 to 27. This was certainly an improvement on the game of the day before. We hope to build on this and make sure we improve against all teams in the second round of the competition.

Round 9 Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs Campbell Paige Blues - Friday 23rd April

After a fantastic game against Country Club Cavaliers last week, FTK 19 & Under were in with a chance of a win against Kingston…or so we thought. Illness meant we weren’t able to field the same team and it was very hard work! The Blues started strongly and, try as they might, Forestry Tasmania Kilburn could not muster the standard of play we saw from them last week and were left standing as the Blues took a first quarter lead of 16 goals. The second quarter saw some positional changes with FTK’s Shantelle Robson moving to GD and Megan Kaye taking WD. This saw a tightened their defensive end and meant the Blues’ goalies had to increase their efforts to continue scoring. Centres Katie Stanford and Tara Patmore fought to control the centre court, with plenty of body coming from both sides. The Blues kept the scoreboard ticking over and by half time had increased their lead to 23. In the third quarter FTK brought on shooter Jess Boulter who helped them outscore the Blues to reduce their lead to 21 at three quarter time. Unfortunately Jess had been unwell during the week and had to go off after the quarter. In the final quarter the Blues took control of the game again and came out winners 57 to 24.

The open match saw a tightly contested first quarter in which Forestry Tasmania Kilburn lead for the majority. Shooters Kiri Van Duiven and Jessica Cornwall were moving well and shooting accurately for FTK. Campbell Paige Blues were working equally as well in their attack end. The Blues found their accelerator with four minutes to go and pulled away to lead by four goals at quarter time. Neither team made positional changes for the second quarter, but the Blues had found their rhythm and surged ahead. FTK’s Danyelle Thompson and the Blues’ Hannah Squires played out a determined battle on the wing. The Blues took an 18 point lead by half time. The final quarter saw Kilburn continue to struggle to move the ball forward, despite strong leads from centre Jess Gilroy the Blues took the match out 65 to 22.

Round 7 Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs Country Club Cavaliers - 17th April 2010

Last weekend was our first game in three weeks, this was because we had a bye followed by two weeks off to allow players to participate in the national netball competitions. It was great to get back on the court and face up to the Launceston based Country Club Cavaliers.
In the 19 and under match, Country Club Cavaliers started the first quarter with a burst of speed, easily overtaking us to get the first few shots on the board. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn then steadied and with the drive of Stacey Harris in the centre court, showed their determination to peg back the Cavaliers’ lead.
Accurate shooting by Jessica Boulter helped FTK lead the match by one goal at quarter time. It was getting exciting! In Aurora League netball four people are required to operate the score bench – two timers and two scorers. I was one of those on Saturday night which was really, really hard as when you’re doing score bench you are not allowed to cheer at all!

In the second quarter Cavaliers brought out the long strong passes from the centre court straight to the goal circle. This was a very effective technique, but one that didn’t take very long for FTK’s Noni Hyland to rise to and take several spectacular intercepts to shut this down. After the second quarter Cavaliers had gained some ground to lead by a goal. The physical intensity of the game continued in the third quarter, as did the even nature of play. FTK’s goal attack Bianca Hollingsworth showed her defensive skill in taking a number of intercepts which were then converted in to goals for us. At three quarter time the margin was still a single goal – this time in our favour. It was down to a nail biting finish. In the final quarter play became scrappy with frustration on with sides growing. Cavaliers pressed their zoning defence to make it difficult for Kilburn to reach their goal circle. Cavaliers made a break towards the end of the quarter and unfortunately for us took out the match by four goals.

The open match saw us up against 2009 premiers Country Club Cavaliers. As expected, Cavaliers started with determination and speed, scoring quickly. Kiri Van Duiven sank some long-range shots for FTK to help get 7 on to scoreboard for the first quarter. In the second quarter Cavaliers further asserted their dominance with their seamless flow to their goal circle allowing them to score freely, while keeping FTK to just three goals for the quarter. In the third quarter Cavaliers took numerous intercepts as our passing let us down. In the final quarter cruised to a 69 goal victory.

We are aiming for a better finish this weekend when we are up against Kingston at Aurora Sports Stadium on Friday night (23rd April). If you would like to come and support us, the 19 and under team starts things off at 6:30pm.

Round 3 Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs StLukes Karana Flames – 6 March 2010

Of all of the rounds of the roster, this was going to be physically and mentally the biggest challenge for FTK. In 2009 Karana finished in the finals in the Open Division and took out the 19 and Under Premiership. This, coupled with the fact that Karana had a number of players in their team that had come through the FTK junior development program, meant it was going to be tough!

In the 19 and Under match both teams were anxious to get scores on the board, with St Lukes Karana Flames settling quickly to take the lead in the first quarter. Inaccuracies in their goal circle saw FTK fall further behind during the second quarter, whilst Karana built on their score. The game was tight with close defence at both ends. In the third quarter FTK found their stride and combined well to come within six goals of Karana, with some accurate shooting from Jess Boulter. Noni Hyland and Shantelle Robson maintained their strong circle
defence for FTK. The final quarter saw Karana run away from Kilburn scoring 15 goals to their two and taking out the match by 20 goals. Not bad against the reigning premiers but we can do better and will next time we meet!

In the Open match FTK was simply outclassed by an experienced and polished Stlukes
Karana Flames. Starting strongly in the first quarter Karana took an early lead of 10 goals at quarter time and steamed ahead in the second quarter to increase the difference to 30 goals. The second half was much of the same with Karana extending their lead to 47
goals at the end of the third and finished the match with a 61 goal win. FTK went away very tired and sore but having had a big learning experience.

Round 5 Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs Burnie Tigers 20 March 2010

Not having games in Rounds 2 or 4 meant FTK are yet to get into a strong rhythm with games. This weekend saw them feature in two games at the Gala Weekend at Aurora Sports Stadium in Hobart. We were very keen to get our first win on the board and this was a good opportunity to do so.

In the 19 & Under match FTK and the Burnie tigers both got on the scoreboard quickly. Burnie settled easily in to a free flowing game which saw them take the lead by five goals at the end of the first quarter. An injury to Kilburn Co-captain, Noni Hyland, early on in the second quarter brought some changes but she returned to the court after medical attention. Burnie continued to outscore Kilburn, pushing their lead out to 18 by half time. The match continued in much the same vein throughout with the Tigers winning by 24 goals.

In the Open match FTK had a brief, strong start then faded as the cohesive Burnie side took control of the match in the first quarter. Burnie continued their dominance as injury impacted on Kilburn’s combination. Kilburn continued to fight back and keep the scoreboard ticking over but were no match for Burnie who took the match out 70 to 22.

Round 5 Forestry Tasmania Kilburn Vs Edgewater Devon 21 March 2010

FTK had the hard task of back to back games this weekend. After losing by significant margins to Burnie yesterday FTK were tired but out again, his time to face Devon. The match between Forestry Tasmania Kilburn and Edgewater Devon 19 and Under was a close and exciting game for all concerned. The teams were fairly equally matched throughout resulting in frequent one on one tussles for the ball. Devon took the lead in the first quarter and FTK fought strongly to catch up. Tight defensive work from Megan Kaye was a highlight against the fast moving Claire McCaffrey in the third quarter. The determination of both teams saw the scores level at ¾ time. Quick moving from Jess Boulter and accuracy from Bianca Hollingsworth saw FTK converting well. Devon worked equally well in their goal circle with the height and strength of their goalies. The spectators were in fine voice as they tried to support FTK and lift them to their first win of the season. Supporters were on the edge of their seats as he match stayed level until about 4 minutes to go when Devon managed a turn over. This lifted their team and allowed them to score a few quick goals taking out the match by 3. This was a disappointing loss for FTK but it was the first time they really appeared to strongly gel as a team and showed that they can do it next time!

After supporting the 19s in their game it was time for the Open girls to hit the court. With both teams out to chalk up their first win this match was always going to be a tough competition. Both teams started quickly with FTK’s Janelle Cowen moving quickly in the goal circle and shooting accurately. At the end of the first quarter FTK lead Devon by 1 goal. The second quarter had a strong defensive presence. FTK struggled to break through the Devon defence to reach their goal circle, whilst Devon’s goalies made some strong clear moves to enable to ball to reach their circle. By half time Devon had taken the lead by 5 goals. Persistent defence from FTK’s Jessie Mason was a highlight of the third quarter. Several changes were made to the FTK line up coming on for the final quarter, which saw them out score Devon for the quarter but unable to take out the match. Devon won by 8 goals.

The opening of the Aurora League season was held at the Silverdome last weekend. All nine teams in the competition participated over the weekend, with most playing two games. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn’s first game was scheduled at 6pm, directly after Premier David Bartlett officially opened the season.

By Melinda Williams - President, Kilburn Netball Club

We were all very excited to be taking this big step for our club – it has taken us more than 10 years to get a licence to play in the senior Aurora League competition. During this time we have seen promising young players come through our junior development program, only to move to another club when they reach this elite level as we weren’t able to offer the opportunities they sought.

We are very proud of the fact that our 19 and Under team is made up of players who have been with us through their junior competition years, some since they began playing as Under 11s. The 19 and Unders were the first to take the court against the TCY Northern Saints. The Saints are an experienced combination with most players currently in state representative teams. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn took some time to settle and develop a rhythm and some confidence. Several missed scoring opportunities meant the Saints were able to get a jump on the scoreboard. Kilburn fought back with tight defence and greater movement and improved accuracy in the goal circle. Saints ran out winners by 3 goals.

Our open team were looking forward to getting out on the court as a unit….unfortunately this was not the weekend to do it! Kiri White (now Van Duiven) had organised for her wedding to be held on Saturday as the competition has usually started a week later. So, Kiri was in Hobart looking gorgeous for her wedding and was joined by Jade and Chloe depleting our senior numbers by three. Laura Poynton joined the team for the night and several 19s players took the court to boost the team numbers. The Saints started strongly and dominated the scoreboard throughout the match. Forestry Tasmania Kilburn showed some flashes of strength which they will aim to build on throughout the season. TCY Northern Saints took out the mach by 41 goals.

It was a hard weekend but we learnt a lot and aim to improve on our performance next time around.

Next week will be extremely tough for Kilburn as we meet St Lukes Karana Flames, who were 2009 Premiers in the 19 and Under competition and Finalists in the Open competition. These matches are being held at Aurora Sports Stadium in Hobart, the 19 and Under game starts at 6pm on Saturday with the open game following.
