“Hi, I'm Shannon, during the summer of 2011 as a bursary student with Forestry Tasmania, I took the challenge to visit Forestry Tamania's 52 visitor sites.
Well today I am back down in Taranna State Forest; however this time I am venturing out along Fortescue Bay Access Road which as the name suggests leads you into Tasman National Park, and Fortescue Bay. The drive in is lovely, showing you the different stages that the forest is in. Most of the forest is Eucalyptus Globulus more commonly known as Tasmanian Blue Gum. After only 12km, you reach Fortescue Bay. Here park fees do apply, so just be aware, and display your park pass.
There is so much to do down here, and plenty of facilities. It would seem that it is a popular camping ground for families as there was a large area filled with tents. Caravans are also allowed but if you plan on camping, there is a fee. There are also toilet and shower facilities, and BBQ’s.
If outdoor recreation is your kind of thing, this is the place to come. In the time I was down here I saw a variety of different activities. The car behind me on the way in had a kayak on his roof racks (I was definitely jealous of him). So, from kayaking or swimming in the bay to bike riding, and of course a large variety of walks there really is something to suit everybody’s taste.
I did notice while I was there a walkers registration booth, from what I can gather is if you go on a longer walk you should fill out a form, so that they can keep track of who is out, and when you are expected to return etc. Walks vary from a short stroll along the beach, to longer day walks. Some of the walks on offer include:
• Canoe Bay (about 2 hours return)
• Cape Hauy Track (4-5 hours return)
• Cape Raoul (about 5 hours return)
• Mt Fortescue Track (6-7 hours return)
• Tasman Trail (about 6 - 8 hours one way)
They all have their own attractions to go and see, so if you have a bit of time it would be great to undertake one or all of them. There is also an office located at the entrance of the park, so if you need any assistance someone in there will be able to help you out.
To get back out, you do have to go back the same way you came in, which will bring you back onto the Arthur Highway. From the turnoff its only about 90km back to Hobart, or if you have time and haven’t already, why not go back along the Taranna Forest Drive?
