“Hi, I'm Shannon, during the summer of 2011 as a bursary student with Forestry Tasmania, I took the challenge to visit Forestry Tamania's 52 visitor sites.
Mt Victoria Forest Reserve can be located by heading out through Ledgerwood and Ringarooma and then following the signs that say Ralphs Falls/Mt Victoria Forest Reserve. If you keep your eye out on the drive up, you will see a dry stone wall which was hand built during the 1920s and is quite a feat!
I think it is about 20km from Ringarooma, and you will come to a car park which is the base for the activities in this reserve. Across the road from the car park is a lovely stone picnic shelter which was built by local volunteers; and inside is your typical set up of gas BBQ and tables.
From the car park, I took the shorter of the two walks which goes to Ralphs Falls Lookout. It’s only 20 minutes return and is a fairly easy walk. The walk takes you through Myrtle forest and lush green moss, and vibrant coloured fungi. Ralphs Falls is different to most the other falls I have seen, from a distance it looks like one long strand of ribbon, and the drop is one of the highest single drop falls in Australia at approximately 100m. Looking out in the other direction, you can see down to New River Valley.
If you want a longer walk, you can veer off the Ralphs Lookout Track which takes you on a 60 minute loop walk back to the car park. This walk stops off at Cash’s Gorge, and goes through tall melaleuca and moss covered banks. I will have to save that one until next time. Back at the beginning of the Ralphs Falls Lookout track are some well maintained toilets.
I jumped back in the car and headed off toward Pyengana, and saw a surprising amount of wildlife (must have been the right time of day for it). There were heaps of wallabies, kookaburras and black cockatoos.
