Scamander Forest Reserve

“Hi, I'm Shannon, during the summer of 2011 as a bursary student with Forestry Tasmania, I took the challenge to visit Forestry Tamania's 52 visitor sites.

I hope you enjoy my blogs and are inspired to visit some or all of these places for yourself."

Scamander Forest Reserve can be accessed from the south end of Scamander by taking the Upper Scamander/Trout Creek Reserve turnoff. This reserve is also referred to as Trout Creek and only takes about 15 minutes to reach.

The area is popular for many different recreational activities. It is located on the banks of the Scamander River making it a popular spot for fishing, and just peering through the gaps in the jetty I could see dozens of fish. Some of the common fish species up this way are bream, trout (hence trout creek) and sometimes mullet, cocky, salmon and trevalla.

Located just next to the jetty is a boat ramp, and if you are staying in Scamander and have a boat, you can leave the car behind and get to this reserve via the river. It was such a calm day when I visited that the whole river was mirror like, and made for some lovely photos with the reflections of the trees and sky.

There are several BBQ and picnic facilities dotted around the site, and it is a great spot for a day trip, but camping is also permitted but like the Griffin Camping area, it works on a first come, first served basis. If you continue past the main camping site, there is a second alcove with a separate toilet for some more space.

So if you love the east coast, and are looking for a great central location not far from town, I think this would be perfect for you. I think it gets pretty popular around the big holidays, but the more the merrier, and from my experience as a kid, it was always great fun making new friends over the summer while camping.
