“Hi, I'm Shannon, during the summer of 2011 as a bursary student with Forestry Tasmania, I took the challenge to visit Forestry Tamania's 52 visitor sites.
Oldina Forest Reserve is located just past Wynyard along the Bass Highway. Take the turnoff onto Oldina Road, and just 4km up you will reach this lovely reserve. This to me looks like a great spot for a family get together or just somewhere to get away from a busy week at work and relax alongside Blackfish Creek.
Located at this reserve are many secluded picnic areas and BBQ facilities, so even if it is a busy day you are sure to find a private spot. There is also a playground and a large open field so the children can go crazy and run around, or kick a footy. Toilet facilities are also available, and surveillance cameras are operating to ensure that the site remains peaceful.
Originally this area was used as farmland, however poor economic conditions meant this industry went bust and was taken over by pine plantation in the 1940s. Now, Forestry Tasmania manages the site for recreational purposes. However, the surrounding forests are Oldina State forest and some parts of the area are pine plantations managed by Taswood Growers.
All in all, a lovely secluded spot away from the hustle and bustle of civilisation. If you are in this area, why not stop in for lunch or a fish in the creek?
