“Hi, I'm Shannon, during the summer of 2011 as a bursary student with Forestry Tasmania, I took the challenge to visit Forestry Tamania's 52 visitor sites.
To get to Arm River you turn off the Bass Highway at Deloraine and follow Mole Creek Main Road through Red Hills, Chudleigh, Mole Creek and Mayberry before it changes to Mersey Forest Road. Once on Mersey Forest Road, just follow the signs which point you down to the Arm River Education Reserve along Maggs Road.
When I arrived, the area was empty, with not another soul in sight. This was a bit eerie as the place is so isolated from anything else. The walk is nice all the same, but I would recommend wearing long pants as there was some awful spiky grass which attacks your legs. This walk crosses the Arm River over a cute wooden bridge and continues into the forest, it takes about 45 minutes return.
The other walk which I thought was nicer starts off in the same way as the interpretive loop, and then forks off and follows the Arm River. The track isn’t as well established and is a bit over grown, but if you don’t mind wading through the ferns you should definitely do it. The reward at the end is Arm River Falls which I had never heard of before but were quite spectacular in their own right.
There are plenty of other sites to see in this area such as Mersey White Water Forest Reserve, Lake Rowallan and the Walls of Jerusalem Track, so if you are in the area, why not have a quick stop in and take the walks?
The Arm River Education Reserve hosts the Arm River Education Centre and is available for private hire, and often used by schools, sporting groups and backpackers as a base point while exploring the surrounding forests it has proved quite popular.
